I must admit that we have been pretty lucky so far this winter. Mild weather has enabled us to get a lot of off-season work done ahead of schedule. This past week, however, we've gone from mild to wild as winter finally arrived.

While it's true that frigid cold temps and a thick blanket of snow make it difficult to finish up some outdoor projects, they really do transform the Park into a eye-pleasing winter wonderland.

Though the park has always been know for its natural beauty which can be witnessed in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, I hope you'll agree that this wonderful "mountain playground" sure looks beautiful in the winter as well. It's my pleasure to give you this peek inside the Park in these idle 'wild winter photos.

Idlewild Cares Program

We hope you and your family are off to a great New Year and wanted to make you aware of a wonderful program and a very important deadline!

January 31 is the deadline for 501C-3 non-profit organizations to submit requests for our Children's Charities Tickets Program which provides free tickets to children with various physical or economic challenges.

Since 1992, our three Kennywood Entertainment parks in western Pennsylvania, Kennywood, Idlewild & SoakZone, and Sandcastle, have donated nearly 200,000 tickets for summer fun to youngsters. The mission of Children's Charities Tickets is to help others make a difference in the children's lives by providing free tickets to disadvantaged children and/or children with disabilities, and for fund-raising purposes for agencies that work directly with them.

A rotating committee of Team Members (employees) from each park administers the program. Non-profit 501C-3 organizations wishing to apply for free tickets for the 2007 season may visit all of our Park's Web sites such as Kennywood Park, Sandcastle Waterpark and Idlewild & SoakZone for an application.

We will award all tickets by March 31. Please spread the good word!

'Tis The Season!

I do love Christmas time. It's certainly one of my favorite times of year!

Idlewild, of course, is known as one of the most popular family destinations during the summer months, but I was surprised to find out that one family actually plans a drive to Idlewild each December...and they don't even enter the gate! You see, they drive out to see "Big Santa". Yes, "Big Santa"...the tall figure that stands at the exit gate each year and sends extra large holiday greetings to all travelers along US Route 30.

I haven't been able to determine how many years "Big Santa" has been sending his Holiday greetings from Idlewild, but he certainly has become a holiday tradition! Christmas lights and garland complete the public display at the exit gate, but inside the Main Office we always put up a Christmas tree. Christmas music is played throughout the hallways which are adorned with all of the holiday cards sent in by Team Members, Guests, Suppliers, and other friends.

As we process all the Idlewild Season Pass orders that many lucky people will be receiving this Christmas, know that we are definately in a Christmas atmoshpere and in the Christmas spirit!!

New Website Coming Soon!

Since taking over the PR/Marketing duties last year, I have been constantly asked about our website...basically, "When are you going to update it?" It is true that while our website was very good when it was launched several years ago, the advancements in web technology have made our little ol' website looking, well, pretty boring.

So, for 2007, in addition to our new family ride (details to be announced!), we are also eagerly anticipating the launch of a brand new website. We are working vigorously to create an informative, easy-to-use, visually appealing website that will prove useful to both Guests that are familiar with the Park and also first-time visitors. It will be updated frequently with the latest information regarding special events, promotions, weather conditions, recent photos and plenty of other fun stuff.

Our plan is to launch the new website at the end of January. Stay tuned for further updates and announcements concerning this exciting project!

The "Off" Season

Ever wonder what goes on in the off-season?

Well, we don't get to go on vacation! There's just as much work to be done during the long, cold winter months as there is in the summer.

For instance, each ride is dismantled, thoroughly inspected, and repainted so it can be ready to go for 2007. The picture at left shows our Maintenance Team working on removing some pieces of the Spider in Olde Idlewild.

Speaking of 2007...we hope that you'll love what new things we have in store for you at Idlewild. Details are still being finalized, but I think that everyone will love the newest addition to Idlewild's family-friendly ride linup. We hope to make the announcment (with all the details!) shortly after the New Year!

Although I can't fully reveal WHAT it is quite yet, I am open to taking guesses. What type of new ride are YOU hoping for? (Keep in mind, it is a family oriented ride) I can't wait to hear your guesses!

Idlewild Park Donates Darlington Station to Ligonier Valley Rail Road Association

We're excited to announce that at 2:00 p.m. today, we will hand over the keys to the Darlington Station (recent picture above) to the Ligonier Valley Rail Road Association (LVRRA) and effectively save a local historic landmark!

We have worked out an agreement with the LVRRA to help it preserve and protect the Darlington Station. Kennywood Entertainment (parent company of Idlewild Park & SoakZone), has agreed to sub-divide and grant the property to the LVRRA and the lead grant awarded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation will allow the Association to restore the exterior of the building and to improve the property. A grant from the Allegheny Foundation will provide project support including engineering and architectural expenses. Additional building grants will be sought via a "Save the Station" campaign to establish a museum, library, office space and re-create the station's original waiting room and restore it to its 1930's grandeur (see picture below).

ABOUT THE LIGONIER VALLEY RAIL ROAD AND LVRR ASSOCIATION
One of the better known short-line railroads, the Ligonier Valley Rail Road connected Ligonier Valley with the rest of the world via the Pennsylvania RR at Latrobe, PA and connected the rest of the world with Pennsylvania's Mountain Playground, Ligonier Valley in general and Idlewild Park in particular. The Railroad began operation in 1877 and over the course of its 75 years, carried nine million passengers and hauled 32 million tons of freight through August 31, 1952.

The Ligonier Valley Rail Road Association is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to preserve the legacy of the Ligonier Valley Rail Road, conserve its vestiges, collect its relics and memorabilia and educate the public about railroading in Ligonier Valley. Stations of the LVRR included - Ligonier - Bells - Millbank - Idlewild - Darlington - Longbridge - Kingston - Osborn - Oakville - Latrobe. The Darlington station, built circa 1900, dates from an era when the railroads maintained a personal presence in the communities they served. The Darlington station served as both a workplace for the agent, who served as passenger agent, freight agent and block operator, and as the residence for the agent and his family. The front room served as the ticket office, waiting room and a convenience store where the passengers could buy a loaf of bread and quart of milk. The resident family had a living room behind the waiting room, two upstairs bedrooms and a kitchen in the basement. After Idlewild Park took ownership in the early 1950's, the building served as quarters for park employees.

An Alien Space ship has mysteriously crashed along our Haunted Hollow Train ride deep in our woods.

Maybe they were so excited about Hallowboo 2 at Idlewild, that in their haste to get here they crashed! They probably wanted to be the first in line when we open our gates to Hallowboo on October 7th.

What's really bizarre is that there is an "OBX" sticker on this Alien ship. Seems like its some kind of creepy cryptic code to me!

I sure hope they're friendly and like funnel cake!

Hallowboo! Screams into Idlewild Park

If you're looking for an alternative to the more frightening events of the season, treat your self and your family to "Hallowboo!" beginning October 7th.

We didn't know what to expect with our first Hallowboo! event last Fall, but it was huge success and exceeded our wildest expectations and those of our guests too. Now, Hallowboo! is back and better than ever and we think it will become another wonderful family fun tradition at Idlewild Park.

Many of our most popular rides and attractions in Olde Idlewild, Jumpin' Jungle, Hootin' Holler, Raccoon Lagoon and Story Book Forest will be completely redesigned and redecorated in fun Halloween themes. Kids can Trick or Treat throughout Story Book Forest; walk through a hay bale maze; ride the Haunted Hollow train ride; and you can enjoy two themed shows performed three times per day. Spookier attractions include "Confusing Hilda's," an eerie house where Guests see strange and unusual things and "The Parlor" - a tour of a creepy funeral home. Concessions include many fall favorites, plus some brand new menu items such as sausage bowls, Charley Biggs' Chicken, and a fall version of the park's signature Cyclone Cone.

We have a lot fun events scheduled too! For example, on October 8, Froggy 94.5 FM will present the "Haunted Hearse." On October 14, Star 100.7 FM will be on-site from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. And, on October 28, kids can join Radio Disney (560 AM) in Olde Idlewild for games, trivia, music and fun.

Hallowboo! is open October 7-8, 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29 from Noon to 6:00 p.m. Story Book Forest will close at 5:30 p.m. Guests pay only one admission to stay all day. For the third year in a row, Idlewild has been named #2 BEST CHILDREN'S PARK in the World by Amusement Today Magazine. We once again placed behind top vote-getter Legoland in Carlsbad, CA, but we narrowed the margin by 4%!

Cartoon Network Tour

Yesterday, The Cartoon Network "GET ANIMATED" tour made its stop at Idlewild & SoakZone, and I was there for all the high-energy fun.

The "GET ANIMATED" tour is a pro-social, pro-lifestyle program designed to motivate, energize and educate kids, age 6 - 11, about healthy living choices. At the event, kids had the opportunity to engage in physical activities that promote the message of keeping in shape.

Activities included a laundry toss, tunnel crawl & wall climb, hockey maze, stationary bike race and jump rope/hula hoop activities.

All activities were themed around cartoon network characters, including Ben 10, Code Name: Kids Next Door, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi.

Everyone loved the event! And the best part was as they exited the event participants received a free gift including, a water cup, pedometer, and other great items to help them stay active everyday.

This week or later this month, if you are planning to head to St. Vincent College in Latrobe for the Pittsburgh Steelers Camp, a great idea is hold your own Summer Camp with your family and the both of us! Have your own "two-a-day" camp and visit the Steelers and Idlewild both the same day - visit us in the morning and the Steelers later in the afternoon!

Cheerleading Competition

On Monday, July 31 we will be holding a special entertaining Cheerleading Competition!

If you've been looking for something to cheer about all summer long, this event is for you!

Squads will perform three-minute competition routines to include segments in dance, transition and cheer.

The Island of Temptation Elimination!

Whew!! What a week it's been.

I apologize that I haven't had much time to update this blog recently. A huge promotion has been keeping me busy...THE ISLAND OF TEMPTATION ELIMINATION. Joining us since last Sunday afternoon have been 8 contestants vieing to win a Dodge Neon from Bud's Auto. All they have to do is survive the Island of Temptation Elimination. The island, located in the middle of Lake Bouquet, is quite visable from the park's new attraction...Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley.

Radio Disney Pirate Fest and Dance Party

Idlewild was pleased to welcome one of our FAVORITE radio stations today....Radio Disney (AM 540 Pittsburgh) .

Rockin' Renee, DJ Daniel and the crew were on-hand to celebrate the opening of Pirates of the Carribean 2 - Dead Man's Chest and Idlewild's own Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley....with plenty of contests offering souvenir merchandise from the new movie, Pirate tickets and more.

One of the contests was a hula-hoop contest which I (along with my trusty assistant, Eduardo) were lucky enough to judge.

Joining in on the fun were the Radio Disney Dancers who rocked the park! What a great group of talented younsters!

As always, the Radio Disney Team provided tons of fun and high-energy excitement! We are sooooooo looking forward to having the back again in August.

'Wild Summer Fun!

I realized today how great I have it. I spend my workweek at the Second Best Kids Park in The World. Not many people can claim that they have a job this fun.

We have Team Member events including exclusive ride time, skating parties and games with prizes. There are even great perks for your days off including FREE admission to Kennywood, Sandcastle, and other great amusement parks. You can work your way through college or earn extra cash for summer all while making life-long friends and having a great time.

The thing is, it's not a job for just me. You can be a part of the Idlewild and SoakZone team also.

We have open interviews Monday through Friday 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the Main Gate Office.

Firefighter/EMS Family Appreciation Day

Today, we honor Firefighter departments and EMS personnel from 16 surrounding counties in central and southwestern Pennsylvania. They and their families are invited to share in a great day of camaraderie and fun.

The day's highlight will be the "Battle of the Barrel" competition as well as vehicle/apparatus displays.

Dreams are Real

One of our most favorite friends and fans of Story Book Forest is Alexis Krosky and her mother Rachel who attended our 50th Anniversary celebration and helped us celebrate this very special anniversary day!

On the count of three, Alexis and Mother Goose unveiled a statue and opened a new section of the Forest, titled "Dreams are Real Memory Lane."

This new section offers a lasting tribute to those wonderful memories that so many of us have had at this terrific place. Personalized bricks are available for purchase by families, individuals, and businesses to placed on the memory lane. In the spirit of making dreams real, Idlewild will contribute one ticket for each brick purchased to our Idlewild Cares program. This program provides free tickets to non-profit children's charities that directly benefit disadvantaged children or children with disabilities.
The statue is a replica of one in St. Marks' Square in Italy and represents the pure innocence of children. The bricks surrounding the statue are available for personal inscription.

A Story Book Day

While our 50th anniversary celebration of Story Book Forest runs all summer long, yesterday was a memorable day as many friends and media took part in a special recognition program.

Here are a few pictures of one extra special Story Book Day!

In the next picture (below) are several guests including Mr. & Mrs. R.Z. (Dick) Macdonald (son of former Idlewild and Story Book Forest owner C.C. Macdonald - Dick was one of the very first managers of SBF); Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hughes (Carl is a board member and former CEO of Kennywood Entertainment and was instrumental in Kennywood's purchase of Idlewild and SBF) and our current park artists, Ed Ostroski and Rosemary Overly, who have contributed so much of their time and talents to keeping Story Book Forest looking so great for over the last 25 years.

Also on hand were several key officials such as Pennsylvania State Senator Don White...and Congressman Jess Stairs' Legislative Aid Connie Frye.

Westmoreland County Councilman Phil Light joined in on the celebration along with his mother Virginia and her great grandchildren...

and we were honored to have Ligonier Mayor Butch Bellas on hand too. Thanks to everyone who stoppped by to say "Hi", sing "Happy Birthday" and eat cake!

On behalf of Mother Goose and all of her Story Book Friends, "Thanks for 50 years of great memories and best wishes for 50 more!"

Celebrate Story Book Forest's 50th Anniversary

Today at 11:00 a.m., we will be holding a special celebration for the 50th anniversary of Story Book Forest. And, YOU'RE WELCOME TOO!

Several political leaders and officials will be on hand for remarks, a ribbon cutting and dedication of Story Book Forest's "Dreams are Real" Memory Lane during our Ligonier Valley Community Day Picnic. Key individuals attending the celebration include R.Z. Macdonald, former manager of Story Book Forest and family member of former Park owners; Pennsylvania State Senator Donald White - Senate District 41; Connie Frye from Congressman Jess Stairs' office; Westmoreland County Commissioner Phil Light; Ligonier Mayor Butch Bellas; Idlewild Park General Manager Brandon Leonatti; and Mother Goose and all her Story Book Friends.

Our Story Book Forest is the only one of its kind in Pennsylvania and the Park's heart and soul and it is a big reason why Idlewild Park is one the best Park's in the world for kids and families!

The Second "First" Dance

Special Events happen at Idlewild all the time. Most are planned, but some are "spur of the moment". This evening we had one such occurence. Newlyweds Bobbi and Clarence Olinger were married this past Saturday, but due to some unforseen circumstances, they were unable to dance their first dance as husband and wife to their chosen song.

Still feeling disappointed, Bobbi contacted Idlewild from her cell phone during their visit to the park today and informed us of their story. Soon, a plan was hatched. During the preshow for the 7:00 p.m. performance of "Let's Go To The Movies" our announcer broke in and notified the crowd that we had two special guests in the audience....Bobbi And Clarence...and their song "Remember When" by Alan Jackson began to play.

Bobbi and Clarence....the stage is yours...
Here's to a long and happy life together!

Idlewild Welcomes European Coaster Club!

Idlewild was very pleased to host 79 members of the European Coaster Club on Saturday, June 3. The club, made up of more than 1,500 members from across the world including the UK, the Netherlands, Brazil, Russia, Australia, Japan, and the United States is currently on the eighth day of a 17 day tour of American amusement parks.

Immediately upon arrival, the coaster enthusiasts enjoyed multiple rides on Idlewild's classic Rollo Coaster. Built in 1938, Rollo Coaster was designed by Herbert Schmeck of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. Justin Garvanovic, founder of the European Coaster Club, dubbed it "mini-Boulderdash", in reference to the famed wooden coaster of similar design located at Idlewild's sister park, Lake Compounce in Bristol, Connecticut.

After a short rain delay, the group was also able to enjoy Idlewild's steel coaster, Wild Mouse. Many in attendance already had ridden the Vekoma ride when it stood at Alton Towers, England before moving to Idlewild in 1993. Coaster Club members commented on the new brown coloring of the steel track, preferring it over the orange as it stood at Alton Towers.

The Idlewild Team truly hopes that the members of the European Coaster Club enjoyed their brief visit to our park. Hopefully, more time can be spent with us on their next visit. (So they can tell us more exciting stories - I loved the stories!!) For the ECC - its off to Kennywood on Sunday, June 4 for a fun-filled day at THE ROLLER COASTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!

Captain Kidd's Commercial to Set Sail

Over 40 "pirates" were on hand for our Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley Commercial Shoot.

Our little buccaneers had a lot of fun and really got into their roles and got soaked! You will too!

Memorial Day Salute

Join us today and tomorrow (May 28-29) for our annual Memorial Day Salute featuring Civil War Living History re-enactors. All active-duty and reservist military personnel (and up to three immediate family members) will receive free admission to Idlewild & SoakZone. You must show military ID/military family ID.

Idlewild's Memorial Day salute features members of the Civil War Society of Western Pennsylvania's Second VA Volunteer Infantry Company B. The encampment, complete with tents, mess area, campfire and other necessities, depicts the daily life of a Civil War soldier. Award-winning park for kids and families

Ever since Idlewild was founded in 1878 as a simple picnic ground along the Ligonier Valley Rail Road - now the oldest amusement park in Pennsylvania, third-oldest in America - we certainly have recieved our share of awards and recognition. However, over the last two years we seem to really be raking in some big awards!

For the second consecutive year, Idlewild and SoakZone was rated the second best kid's park in the world by Amusement Today magazine behind Legoland in California. And, in another survey we took fourth place honors for best park for families in the world based on a survey of amusement park and theme park enthusiasts by the National Amusement Park Historical Association (NAPHA). We placed behind top vote getter Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, FL - that's some pretty good company!

NAPHA is the country's largest amusement park enthusiast organization and its annual Amusement Parks and Attractions survey is the oldest of its type. This is the 20th year of the survey and it is highly regarded within the amusement park industry and within the enthusiasts' circles.

Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley

We invested over one million dollars to build Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley - this new AquaPlay attraction - in Idlewild's SoakZone. Believe me, it's worth every penny because KIDS WILL LOVE IT! It makes SoakZone the most unique and fun waterpark attraction in Pennsylvania!

The addition of Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley increases the size of SoakZone by more than 20% and includes several wet, wild and fun offerings such as: six water slides ranging in length from 19 to 130 feet; a multilevel design featuring crawl tunnels, net climbs, and bridges; A giant tipping bucket holding up to 500 gallons of water; 88 water spray features including water guns, water curtain, tipping cones, spray jets, water wheel and more.

We've been pretty busy since Hallowboo! ended last Fall getting ready for our 129th season, but it's finally here!

All of us at Idlewild are ready for some summer fun (I'm sure you are too!) and we are looking forward to seeing you this season!

The purpose of our blog is to provide YOU with the latest news, developments, exciting events and summer fun deals occurring at Idlewild. This blog complements the Idlewild & SoakZone Web site and our goal is to use it to provide a more current, open and free-flowing forum of all things pertaining to summer fun for families thoughout western Pennsylvania and beyond.

There are a lot of exciting new things in store for you when you visit Idlewild & SoakZone this season, so be sure to visit our/your blog often to get up-to-the-minute Idlewild news and a sneak peak at all of the behind-the-scenes action.
